A contention set is ICANN's, taken from its Reveal Day file. ICANN publishes an updated list on String Confirmation Day.
The strings here are more often names than words: a chain, its token or its
ticker. .avax, .cspr, .sol and .xmr were recorded from announcements
that name the chains behind them: Avalanche, the Casper Association, Solana and
Monero.
Thirteen more joined when ICANN published its list, and most of their
applications say what the string is. .ada and .cardano are one application,
which describes ada as the native asset of the Cardano blockchain. .ethereum
is defined as the blockchain platform, .icp as the Internet Computer Protocol,
.sui as the Sui network, .usdt as a stablecoin and .zec as short for
Zcash. The applicant for .tron and .trx
describes them as a crypto and Web3 brand, .ape is defined as the community
around ApeCoin and ApeChain, .did as decentralized identifiers and .tkns as
an abbreviation of tokens. .defi is named only as a replacement string, so no
application defines it; it is here as the common short form of decentralized
finance.
An applicant’s own reading decides. .ether and .ethers are not members,
because both applications define ether as a medium in space. .bnb is not one
either: both of its applicants define it as bed and breakfast. .hype has two
applicants and two readings, the native token of a blockchain and the English
word for publicity, so it is not a member.
A string that is a company’s own name is left out of every group on this
tracker, so .ledger, .okx, .ripple and .tether are not here.
.coin, .crypto and .wallet are also in finance,
because Radix publishes its own portfolio grouped into seven categories and puts
those three under Finance. Both readings are true of the word, so both are
recorded.
.bit sits here rather than under technology, where Radix and ShortDot both
place it, because the string has a longer history as a blockchain naming system
than as an abbreviation.
Strings that only look like members are listed in excluded and stay out.
.rabbit and .orbit contain the letters of .bit, and .fitbit is a brand of
fitness devices.

A string can belong to more than one group, and these do.
