Rank Math Predicts AI Visibility Will Become a Standard SEO Metric by 2027
As search behavior shifts away from traditional list-based results pages, the metrics used to define search engine optimization (SEO) success are undergoing a major transition. Rank Math, a widely used WordPress SEO plugin based in Gurugram, India, predicts that tracking brand presence in AI-generated answers—known as AI visibility—will become a standard component of SEO reporting by 2027.
For years, marketers and website owners have measured SEO performance using traditional indicators such as keyword rankings, impressions, clicks, and organic traffic. However, Rank Math states that this established model is expanding. Businesses increasingly need to understand whether they are being cited, mentioned, or recommended within the conversational responses generated by AI platforms.
A Shift Driven by Consumer Behavior and Search Platforms
This projection aligns with broader shifts in how consumers look up information. According to a 2026 survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, 42% of adults in the United States use AI chatbots to search for information, making it the most common use case for these tools.
Major search engines are already adapting to this behavioral shift. In June 2026, Google introduced dedicated Generative AI performance reports within its Search Console. These reports provide website owners with distinct visibility metrics for AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative AI features inside Discover. Google completed the worldwide rollout of these dedicated reports on August 31, signaling a structural change in how search visibility is segmented.
According to Rank Math, Google's move is a clear sign to the SEO industry that separating AI visibility from traditional search performance will soon become standard practice for businesses and digital marketing agencies alike.
The Measurement Gap in Traditional SEO
The rise of AI search introduces a new challenge for marketers. A company might achieve strong rankings in standard Google search results while remaining largely absent from answers generated by ChatGPT or other AI platforms. Conversely, a brand could be frequently cited in AI-generated responses without those appearances reflecting in its traditional organic search rankings.
Uzair Nazeer, COO of Rank Math, highlighted this shift, stating that while traditional rankings and traffic will remain relevant, they no longer represent the complete picture of search visibility. Nazeer noted that if consumers are querying AI platforms to decide what to buy, which companies to hire, or where to find information, brands must know if they are included in those answers. He anticipates this tracking will become a routine part of SEO analysis during 2027.
Tracking AI Visibility
To address this emerging demand, Rank Math has integrated measurement tools directly into its platform. Its "AI Visibility" feature is designed to track how brands and products are featured in AI-generated answers.
Rather than evaluating visibility based purely on a website's position in traditional search result lists, the tool monitors specific indicators. These include brand mentions, citations, overall sentiment, and the brand's position within the generated AI responses. Additionally, the tool provides insights into which competing brands are appearing for the same user queries.
