How Shanta Narang Built an SEO Career Focused on Business Revenue Over Rankings
Shanta Narang has built a career spanning over 15 years in organic growth and search engine optimization (SEO), helping prominent brands like BMW, Tata Motors, Medanta, Zell, and Bewakoof. Her core philosophy, 'Rankings don’t build businesses. Revenue does,' challenges standard industry metrics and has established her as a leading figure in India's digital marketing landscape. However, long before managing organic strategies for massive corporations, Narang's path began with a series of personal challenges and a bold leap of faith.
A Leap of Faith and Early Struggles
Narang's interest in the digital space began in 2004 when she enrolled in a mobile marketing course, which was a highly novel concept in India at the time. During a seminar, a speaker introduced the concept of digital marketing and its potential to build financial independence and career opportunities. This presentation proved to be a turning point, inspiring her to pursue a career in the field.
Her ambitions, however, clashed with her family’s traditional expectations, which prioritized conventional paths over career dreams. Lacking support at home, Narang made the difficult decision to leave her family at the age of sixteen. After completing her Class 12 examinations, she moved to Delhi with no guaranteed path forward except her own determination.
In Delhi, Narang took a job at a call center, earning a modest salary of ₹5,000 per month. Simultaneously, she utilized a scholarship to enroll in a multimedia and animation course. Managing rent, education fees, food, and daily expenses on such a restricted income required immense sacrifice. Narang credits this challenging period with building the resilience and strength that would define her career.
Self-Taught in the Early Era of SEO
When Narang entered the search optimization industry, the field was in its infancy in India. The practice was primarily limited to directory submissions, backlinks, and technical experimentation. Resources, structured learning materials, and industry mentors were virtually non-existent, prompting Narang to teach herself.
She developed her skillset through trial and error, running her own experiments in link building, domain research, content optimization, and technical SEO. A major breakthrough occurred during her time at Arbro Pharmaceuticals, where she oversaw SEO for multiple projects, including Foodsafety Helpline. Her strategies significantly boosted organic visibility for the platform, drawing recognition from industry authorities.
Following this success, she expanded her expertise across multiple sectors—including healthcare, e-commerce, automotive, education, and finance—collaborating with brands such as Takshila Learning, Truemeds, Digital Refresh Networks, Zell, and Bewakoof.
Shifting Focus From Rankings to Revenue
Throughout her career, Narang has advocated for a fundamental shift in how companies evaluate SEO success. She emphasizes that search engine optimization should not be measured solely by keyword rankings, noting that high positions on search engine results pages do not automatically equate to business growth.
According to Narang, many organizations allocate substantial time and capital to ranking for keywords that generate high traffic but lack real business value. While these efforts may drive visitors to a website, they fail to convert into sales or measurable revenue. Narang asserts that effective SEO strategies must prioritize business-driving keywords and focus on the ultimate financial outcome rather than cosmetic rankings. Today, she continues to apply this philosophy while mentoring hundreds of upcoming SEO professionals.
