How Google AI Overviews Are Reshaping CTRs and SEO Citation Strategies

The rapid expansion of Google’s AI Overviews (AIOs) is driving a significant transformation across the search engine optimization (SEO) landscape. Over the past 18 months, digital marketers have witnessed a shifting search environment where traditional organic traffic is declining, forcing businesses to reevaluate how they measure and target search visibility.

The Expansion of AI Overviews

AI Overviews are capturing a rapidly growing portion of search results. Recent tracking data indicates that AIOs now appear on approximately 48% of tracked search queries, representing a steep increase from the 31% recorded just one year earlier.

This growth has had a direct, measurable impact on user clicks. According to data from Ahrefs, the presence of an AI Overview resulted in a 34.5% drop in click-through rate (CTR) for the top-ranking organic search result in April 2025. By December 2025, that decline intensified, with the top-ranking organic spot experiencing a 58% drop in CTR when an AIO was present. However, the severity of this traffic loss is not uniform, as the impact varies based on the specific keyword set, device type, and organic ranking position.

Citations Offer New Traffic Pathways

Despite the decline in direct organic clicks, AI Overviews also present new opportunities for driving web traffic. A study by Seer Interactive, which monitored 53 brands across 5.47 million queries, found that CTR on queries with AI Overviews bottomed out at 1.3% in December 2025 before climbing to 2.4% by February 2026—an 85% recovery over a two-month period.

The research highlights that securing citations within these AI-generated answers is crucial for capturing search traffic. Brands cited directly inside the AI Overviews earned approximately 120% more organic clicks per impression than uncited brands answering the same search queries.

Where Google Pulls Citation Data

For digital marketers looking to adapt, understanding where Google sources its AI Overview citations is key. An analysis of 46 million citations reveals that video platforms and reference sites are highly favored over standard optimized blog posts. The top citation sources include:

  • YouTube: Sourced in 23.3% of all AI Overview citations.
  • Wikipedia: Sourced in 18.4% of citations.
  • Google.com itself: Sourced in roughly 16.4% of citations.

Rethinking Search Metrics

While a drop in raw click volume can look concerning on paper, it does not necessarily translate to poor business performance. Being referenced in an AI Overview without receiving a direct click still provides value by boosting brand recognition and perceived authority. Furthermore, Google’s algorithms continue to prioritize websites that showcase comprehensive depth on a topic rather than thin, isolated pages.

In some instances, businesses have observed their search impressions grow while clicks remained flat. Data from Google Analytics 4 (GA4) accounts also reveals that the organic traffic lost to AI Overviews consists primarily of top-of-funnel visitors who rarely convert into paying customers. Because of this, the actual commercial impact on businesses has remained minimal in many cases.

Shifting the Optimization Playbook

To succeed in this new search environment, marketers must prioritize earning citations within AI Overviews rather than focusing solely on traditional ranking positions. Holding the top organic position on a page yields less value if the brand is not directly quoted within the AIO at the top of the search results.

To align with how Google extracts information, content creators should structure their pages with highly liftable answers. This involves placing direct, self-contained responses near the top of the page, making it easier for Google's AI systems to pull and cite the content.
