The 28 strings

22 in no contention set
6 in a contention set, with the number of primary applications shown

A contention set is ICANN's, taken from its Reveal Day file. ICANN publishes an updated list on String Confirmation Day.

Four kinds of string are here, and they got in four different ways.

Defined that way by their applicants. .anime and .manga each have two applicants, who define them as Japanese animation and Japanese comics. .comedy is defined as humorous content and entertainment, .comics as illustrated storytelling, .jazz as the music, .punk as an aesthetic tied to punk music and its culture, .shorts as short-form videos, and .vid and .vids as short forms of video. .fest and .festival are defined as organised events and celebrations, and all three applicants for .story define it as a narrative.

.podcast needs a line of its own. Radix files it under Creator in its published grouping. Two other applicants applied for the same string, and all three define it as an audio programme, so it is recorded here.

Named only as replacement strings. .album, .cartoon, .cosplay, .entertainment, .fandom, .gossip, .magazine, .nightlife, .otaku, .playlist and .rap have no application of their own to define them. They are here as plain words.

Claimed in public, and not in ICANN’s list. .fan and .shortvideo are strings an applicant said it was applying for before Reveal Day.

Two strings by this tracker’s reading. .only and .xxl are here on this tracker’s reading, which is not their applicants’. Both applications for .xxl define it as extra extra large, a designation of size, and one of the two lists entertainment and events among the uses it has in mind. The .only application defines the word as solely or exclusively. One of the two applicants for .xxl is TLD Empire, which belongs to the studio that publishes this tracker.

Some near neighbours are not members. .pod has several applicants and more than one meaning, a podcast for one and a container for another. .fantasy, .records and .sound are each defined by their applicants as words with several meanings.

A string that is a company’s own name is left out of every group on this tracker, so the broadcasters and streaming services in ICANN’s list are not here.

The strings in excluded contain a keyword and are not members. .fanatics and .fanuc are names, and .springfestival is a holiday.
